The Navy and Newport News Shipbuilding will celebrate the christening of the Virginia-class submarine Washington on Saturday at the shipyard.
The ceremony is closed to the public, but the shipyard will provide a webcast of the event, which begins at 11 a.m. Check it out here.
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus will be the keynote speaker. His daughter, Elisabeth, is the ship's sponsor and will do the honors, smashing a bottle of sparkling wine across the submarine's bow.
The shipyard, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries, builds the nuclear-powered submarines in partnership with General Dynamics Electric Boat of Groton, Conn. Each yard assembles sections of the submarines, then take turns assembling the boats and delivering them to the Navy.
Washington will be the 14th Virginia-class submarine and the seventh to be delivered by Newport News. Construction began in September 2011, marking the beginning of the two-submarines-per-year build plan between Newport News and Electric Boat.
